20 Ways to Lose Weight

20 Ways to Lose Weight

ItemTitle

1. Take it one step at a time

Start by paying attention to what you eat. Cut back on fat and sweets and add more fruits and vegetables. After you have that under control, add exercise. If you hate to exercise try it for only 15 minutes a day at first, then a 1/2-hour. Keep in mind that while you are exercising you are burning calories and not eating. Also, it will be easier if you chose an activity that you enjoy.

2. Find a friend

It is always good to have support when you are trying to lose weight. Find a friend who wants to lose weight and compare notes, weigh-in together and maybe even have a contest.

3. Use weights

Working out weights will build muscle and raise your metabolism so you will burn more calories. Also, muscle takes up less space than fat so you will be smaller (but probably weigh more).

4. Eat fewer carbs

Don't eat as much bread and pasta and you will see a difference.

5. Set a goal

Set a deadline to lose the weight and write it down. For example, ' By Dec 14/04 I will weigh 150 lbs or less'. Put it somewhere you will see it daily.

6. Give up soda

If you drink a soda or 2 a day you are adding empty calories. If you find it hard to stop completely, cut back at first and drink water instead.

7. Grill or boil

Avoid fried meat, grill and use lots of spices. You will get used to it and probably enjoy it more.

8. Don't buy junk food

When you go shopping, don't go on an empty stomach and you will be less likely to buy junk food. Keep your home 'junk food free' so you won't be tempted to indulge.

9. Eat breakfast

Consume most of your calories early in the day and always eat breakfast. Don't eat after 8pm and not only will you avoid those added calories but you will sleep better.

10. Give yourself a treat

When you tell yourself that you can't have something you want it more. Give yourself a treat once a day (ie. half a cookie) and you won't feel you are missing out.

11. Use smaller plates

Trick yourself into believing that you are eating more by using a smaller plate.

12. Drink lots of water

Drink water when you are feeling hungry and you will get that 'full' feeling.

13. Don't eat everything on your plate

Many times we eat just because it's there. Pay attention to when you have had enough.

14. Eat five or six meals a day

Eating more frequently will keep you from getting too hungry.

15. Plan your workout sessions

Write your workout sessions in your journal or planner.

16. Stay away from fad diets

Fad diets don't work. If you lose weight fast chances are that you will gain it back (and more) just as fast. It takes time to put it on and time to take it off.

17. Do several workouts a day

While you are watching TV do crunches and leg lifts.

18. Measure your food

If you decide to have junk food for a snack - be sure to measure and control what you eat.

19. Keep pre-cut vegetables

... and ward off those cravings.

20. Create Good Habits

It is a known fact that when we do something twenty-one times it becomes a habit. Create good eating habits.

Betty Boop Figurines - How to Find and Value Them

Betty Boop Figurines - How to Find and Value Them

Betty Boop Figurines - Beautiful Art and Valuable Investment

Collectibles have long been a popular pursuit for fans of television shows, cartoons, movies and comic strips. Collecting memorabilia from these forms of entertainment makes for a fun, exciting and frequently profitable pastime for many fans.

Even once the obsession or fascination with a particular show or character passes, a collection can often be sold off to fund the latest intrigue or to provide some extra and much needed cash. In this article we'll explore this phenomenon with a stocking clad sex symbol who has been with us since he 1930's.

Background Of The Sultry Songstress

Ever since she first appeared on movie screens on August 9, 1930, the diminutive Betty stole the hearts of fans worldwide. Created by animator Myron "Grim" Natwick, her popularity has endured now for over 80 years, and it is clear that she has become and will remain an enduring icon and sex symbol for a long time to come.

Combining the best qualities of two 1920's icons - screen siren Clara Bow and sultry singer Helen Kane - Betty won fans through her rare combination of outrageous sex appeal and a sincerely huge heart.

Her popularity crossed over from the big screen to the homes and hearths of collectors everywhere as fans clamored for a chance to take Betty home with them in the form of a wide range of Betty Boop merchandise.

One of the most collectible categories of these products is Betty Boop Figurines.

Why Are Betty Boop Figurines So Popular?

While many forms of Betty Boop Memorabilia have proved worthy of collecting, including plates, mouse pads, signs, music boxes and cookie jars, one of the most enduring incarnations is the Betty Boop Figurine.

Our guess is that figurines have gained so much in popularity and collectability because they present Betty in all of her three dimensional glory.

Rare Figurines date back to the 1930's when Betty was at the height of her popularity. Committed collectors search far and wide for these rarities which can be very hard to find.

While these almost century old figurines can bring a dear price for those who find and deal in them, Betty Boop statues can be enjoyed by collectors of much more modest means, making Betty within reach of any collector's budget.

This affordability combined with Betty's natural appeal have made her one of the most popular collectibles with a rabid and avid fan base.

Where Can You Find Betty Boop Figurines?

It's not hard to find these figurines. They abound online, at Amazon, eBay and myriad specialty shops. You can also usually find these collectibles in vintage and curio shops.

They are generally affordably priced commonly ranging from on the low end to or more on the high end.

There are also a few "special edition" collectibles available such as the "Calendar Girl" series. Special editions are typically all are hand brush painted, with certificates of authenticity.

One statement of caution for beginners, there are many inferior Betty Boop figurines out there. As always, be careful, check certificates of authenticity, receipts (if available) and gather any information you can from collectors' forums.

Determining the Value Of Your Betty Boop Figurines - How Much Are They Worth?

While value is in the eye of the purchaser and ultimately any collectible is worth whatever a willing buyer will pay a willing seller in an arms-length transaction, emotion inevitably comes into play whenever passionate collectors are involved.

To get a thumbnail idea of what your figures are worth, the easiest and quickest way is to just login to your eBay account and do a "completed items" search for Betty Boop figurines.

This will show you what real people have paid in real life transactions buying and selling these collectibles. Be sure to check the listings though because authentic vintage Betty statuettes will go for significantly more if you sell them through a collector's channel as opposed to an eBay auction.

So, use the eBay search results as a guide, but not as a bible for values. Remember, all you have to do is find someone who is looking for the figurine that you have and you'll get a much better price.

An '80s Revival

Betty enjoyed a resurgence of popularity in the 1980s, becoming ubiquitous on bags, belts, t-shirts, belts, towels, key chains, blankets and especially in art prints.

This resurgence was most likely a result of Betty's appearance in three movies that decade, including the wildly successful "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988), as well as "The Romance of Betty Boop" (1984), and "The Betty Boop Movie Mystery" (1989).

Light-Hearted Collectibles To Brighten Your Days

If you enjoy Betty Boop, and how could you not, then take a look at her figurines and other memorabilia and capture some of the innocent naughtiness and nostalgia she represents.

Toddler Yeast Infection? How to Treat Yeast in Toddlers Quickly and Naturally

Toddler Yeast Infection? How to Treat Yeast in Toddlers Quickly and Naturally

ItemTitle

Toddlerhood is such a demanding age - little ones are growing, exploring and learning. Their bodies are also still quite sensitive and delicate, so even a little "bonk" can be so upsetting to them! Dealing with a toddler yeast infection on top of everything else can be quite frustrating without the right approach.

Yeast infections in toddlers have become more and more common over the past decade for a number of reasons. The first, most important reason is the prevalent use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are a life saving drug under certain circumstances, but there's universal agreement in the medical community that they are widely overused. Even when properly used, they do have side effects - one important side effect being that antibiotics cause babies, children and adults to become vulnerable to yeast infections.

Using antibiotics even one time, even if it was not in the immediate past, can cause a toddler to develop recurrent yeast problems. It's important to nip yeast infections in babies and children in the bud, as chronic yeast problems can contribute to a whole host of health problems including:

*asthma
*allergies
*auto-immune disease
*ADD/ADHD
*arthritis
*weakened immunity
*headaches
*fatigue
*skin problems
*etc.

Initially, toddler yeast will most often show up as oral yeast (thrush), a yeast diaper rash or other yeast symptoms. Once the yeast becomes more prevalent, gradually other more subtle symptoms will arise, such as those listed above, as well as sugar cravings, rashes, moodiness, etc.

The reason why yeast infections in toddlers (or anyone) can be so harmful over the long term is that yeast cells emit powerful toxins, including chemicals such as formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, etc. Also, as the yeast becomes entrenched and starts to get a stronger foothold in the body, it will actually develop long hyphae that can perforate the intestines, allowing undigested food particles to pass through that should not be passing into the blood stream.

This is known as "leaky gut syndrome" and it's definitely not a good thing to have - those undigested food particles can cause or worsen asthma, allergies and all kinds of immune problems.

In my humble opinion, most pediatricians are not focused on treating yeast problems so generally they will just write a prescription for Nystatin, Diflucan or some other drug for toddler yeast infections.

Unfortunately, according to medical researchers, anti-fungal drugs do not do a very good job of getting rid of all the yeast and they are also generally quite toxic. According to medical researcher Prusty Rao, "The challenge has been to find therapeutic agents that can kill the fungus, but not harm the surrounding tissue; that's proven to be very difficult."

So what happens is the drugs will suppress the yeast temporarily, but then as soon as the drug is stopped the yeast grows right back. Over the past 2 years of helping hundreds of moms deal with yeast problems in their children, I cannot count how many have told me that they'd already used all the drugs and their children still had yeast.

What I've found is that there really is only one sure-fire way to get rid of yeast in babies and children, including toddlers, that is truly safe and effective. The secret is a three-step approach:

1. Kill the yeast completely safely, with the non-toxic and natural approach.
2. Rebuild your child's natural immunity to yeast as it was an underlying imbalance that allowed the yeast to grow out of control in the first place. This is the missing step in virtually every yeast program out there and it's essential to succeed in getting rid of the yeast permanently.
3. Tailor the first two steps according to the age of the child: i.e. a cookie-cutter approach really doesn't work as a newborn is slightly different from an older baby who is slightly different from a toddler, etc.

It's simple and it works. And the best part is not only is this approach non-toxic, it actually makes your child healthier and stronger both in the short term and long term.

A Negative Calorie Food List

A Negative Calorie Food List

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

To make a negative calorie food list, we must be precisely clear on what we mean. There has been some confusion about this phrase. Some have thought that this kind of food contains no calories at all. This can't be right as long as all kinds of food contains at least some energy.

We're going to present you with a list of this kind of food. If you follow it, not necessarly without any other kinds of food, it will increase metabolism naturally, and the result will be weight loss - especially compared with eating a meal where these foods are not included.

Now, it's time for a definition. When we say nagative calorie food, we mean foods which contain so little energy that the body actually uses more energy to digest and absorb the nutrients. So if you subtract calories you'll burn from the calories you eat, the result will be negative. Only by digesting the food you have eaten, there will be a net loss of energy or a negative energy balance. This is what must happen if you want to lose weight but with this food you don't have to do anything but eat it to accomplish that.

You can also eat protein in combination with such food. Good protein will help you control your appetite as well as increase your metabolism because the total amount of calories are not reduced too much.

Here is the list:

Vegetables

Fennel, aubergine, gourd, broccoli, leek, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, marrow, cauliflower, peppers, celery, radish, chicory, spinach, cress, tomato, cucumber, turnip.

Fruits

Apricot, mandarin orange, blackberry, melon canteloupe, blackcurrant, peaches, clementines, plums, damsons, raspberry, grapefruit. rhubarb, guava, strawberry, honeydew melon, tangerine, lemon, watermelon.

Luscious Spinach Salad With Cremini Mushrooms, Crispy Pancetta in a Savory Maple Vinaigrette

Luscious Spinach Salad With Cremini Mushrooms, Crispy Pancetta in a Savory Maple Vinaigrette

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Some evenings I simply crave veggies. Unfortunately, I seem to have this need to dress up my simple veggies with this, that and the other, and often end up just a tad bit short of simple. However, always delicious!

That's how I ended up with this simple salad. I was feeling like a spinach salad but needed just a little more tickle for the taste buds. I have this fabulous dressing that I use for spinach salad but didn't have the brown sugar it called for. No problem I thought, I'll substitute with maple syrup. Oh, and wouldn't crispy pancetta taste divine with the maple flavored vinaigrette? Well, one thing led to another and voila! My spinach salad was born. (I sound like the children's book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie")

I must admit the maple flavors in the vinaigrette pair beautifully with the cremini mushrooms and crispy pancetta. However, if you're vegan or vegetarian, feel free to skip the pancetta and add other delicious flavors such as toasted walnuts or pecans, or even herbed croutons would be yummy. Just a little something crunchy for some texture with the soft mushrooms and firm spinach leaves.

If you don't have pancetta on hand, feel free to substitute with your favorite smoked bacon. As well, you can substitute the maple syrup with brown sugar. This beautiful and delicious salad is great all by itself, but it's also tasty paired with salmon or pork.

Enjoy your veggies tonight with this divine Spinach Salad. Happy Cooking!

Serves 2

Ingredients

5 ounces baby spinach, washed and paper towel dried

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1/4 cup maple syrup

3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon Worcestershire

salt and pepper to taste

1 cup sliced cremini mushrooms

8-10 slices pancetta

Directions

In a skillet on medium heat, fry the pancetta just as you would bacon. Remove the pancetta to a bowl and then crumble when cool. Add the cremini mushrooms to the fat left in the pan and saute the mushrooms until wilted.

Whisk together the red wine vinegar, olive oil, mustard, Worcestershire, and maple syrup. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Toss the spinach leaves with about half the dressing. Reserve the other half in the frig for up to 3 days for another salad or use over grilled salmon.

Plate the spinach and then top with the mushrooms and crumbled crispy pancetta. Serve immediately.

For a Vegetarian option: Omit the pancetta and replace with toasted walnuts or pecans and thin sliced red onion

How to Write an Introduction - 5 Steps to Help You

How to Write an Introduction - 5 Steps to Help You

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Whether you are writing an essay for school, an article for the web, or a professional report, you must start with a good introduction.  Why?  Think about your own experience as a reader.  If the first two to three sentences do not catch your attention, will you continue to read on?  It's unlikely!  Without a strong introduction, you will turn the page to the next article, or surf to the next site, or pick up the next proposal.  Therefore, if you want your writing to do its job, you must start with a strong introduction.  Here are five steps to help you do it.

1.  Don't neglect the pre-writing process.

Pre-writing should take up most of your time as a writer, unless you have a great deal of experience in what you're writing about (and even then, your writing will be much stronger if you go through the pre-writing process).  Pre-writing begins with research, research, research.  You want to research more than you think you need to, and then after you think you've definitely researched enough, research just a little bit more.  After researching comes the steps of forming a general thesis, then a general outline, then your first draft.  There's much more to be said pre-writing, but for now, stick to those four steps:  research, thesis, outline, draft.  As you will see below, you cannot write an introduction without a thesis, and you cannot write an introduction without knowing where your report will go after your thesis.  My advice?  Write your introduction dead last!

2.  Your thesis is the star of the show.

If your report were a debutante ball, all the effort that goes into arranging the party would be the pre-writing process; the environment, music, attendees, fruit punch, and so forth would be the body of your report; but the debutante herself would be your thesis.  She may be only one person amongst hundreds of other guests, but all the other guests are there for her -- she's the star of the show.  The job of your introductory paragraph or introductory section is to introduce your thesis.  Therefore, your whole introduction should build up to your thesis.

No matter what your thesis is, your introduction needs to perform certain tasks, which are now listed below.

3.  Present a problem, then solve it with your thesis.

For example, if you are writing about the new and improved mouse trap you have invented and want to sell, your thesis might be, "My mousetrap is better than all the existing mousetraps on the market today."  Your introduction, then, needs to begin by stating that there is a problem with existing mousetraps.

So your first sentence might be,

"No one likes to have mice in their house, but unfortunately most mousetraps do not effectively remove mice" (the problem).

If the first sentence or paragraph in your introduction presents a problem, the next few sentences should begin to guide the reader into solving the problem.  Continuing with the mousetrap example, your next few sentences might state,

"In a traditional mousetrap, mice frequently eat the cheese without getting caught."  (This is what's wrong with existing traps.)  "My mousetrap contains cheese inside a trapdoor, which the mouse automatically triggers upon entering the trap.  The mouse is then caught inside, along with the cheese." (Wow, your mousetrap sounds like an improvement!)  "Therefore, my mousetrap is better than all the existing mousetraps on the market today."

5.  Once you've stated your thesis, tell your reader what else they will learn when they read your report.

Do you remember learning the five paragraph essay in high school?  There were some parts of this cookie-cutter writing format that were horrendous, and ought never to have been taught to poor, unsuspecting high school students.  However, there are parts of this writing method that are useful, and which I still use today.  One of those is:  tell your reader what you are going to say, say it, and tell them you said it.  Now, in some writing philosophies, you tell your reader what your report is about before you get to the thesis, and your thesis is the very last sentence of your introduction.  Personally I do not like this method.  I prefer to state my thesis, and then give my reader a reason to read the rest of the report.  Using the mousetrap example again, after stating the thesis, you could go on to tell the reader how you will prove that your mousetrap is the best in a second introductory paragraph:

"First, I will examine the three top-selling mousetraps on the market and their significant flaws.  Then, I will explain the research and development process for my mousetrap.  Finally, I will present two case studies of businesses that have successfully implemented my mousetraps."

I think readers appreciate what they are getting into -- don't you?

A well-written introduction will propel your reader into the rest of your article or report.  No matter how important the information in your report is, it won't matter very much if no one reads it!  So do your writing a favor:  follow the five steps above and write a clear, compelling introduction for every article, essay, and report you write.

How to Throw a Build a Bear Party From Home

How to Throw a Build a Bear Party From Home

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Build a Bears are great toys for kids. They provide hours of imaginative play and are relatively inexpensive. Kids of every age love them, so what better party to throw than one with their favorite stuffed animal together with their best friends, family, and neighbors.

You don't need to pay hundreds of dollars to attend the Build a Bear workshop's party at the mall. You can do it yourself, on a budget, from home. A few simple and easy ideas will get you on your way to throwing your child a great party from the comforts of your own home. You won't even have to worry about how many people you can invite! Some simple suggestions can get you on your way to a great party in no time.

First, the invitations. You can find Build a Bear clip art online and can make an invitation to the party that way. If you are in to card making or scrap-booking, you can make your own invitations and hand them out to friends and family who will be attending our Build a Bear party. On the invitation, you can request that each child brings her own Build a Bear or other stuffed animal dressed in her favorite costume. If budget allows, you can include a Build a Bear for them to bring with an outfit or include just an outfit for them to bring their own bear dressed in.

Second, the decorations. Build a Bear is all about being colorful. You can get balloons and streamers in the primary colors to decorate your house with. You can also use the clip art from the invitations on the decorations as well.

Third, what to eat? You can easily make a bear shaped cake with one cake for the head and 2 small round cakes for the ears. To make it easy, do cupcakes or decorate your own cookie. If you want to serve lunch, you could find a bear cookie cutter (or even a mickey mouse one would do) to cut out PB&J sandwiches with. Served along with yellow lemonade or "berry" smoothies.

For little girls, you could have a "beary" special tea party where the bear and the girl come dresses up as princesses and have a tea party together. Princess parties are very popular for little girls right now, so this may be a fun variation for them to try out with their friends.

When the guests arrive you can do free coloring pages printed from the Internet, or free games found on Build a Bear's website. You could do a scavenger hunt where party goers search for clues to find Build a Bear items hidden throughout the house or yard. It would be nice to make a craft as well.

After the child opens gifts, and it is time to leave, it is customary to send a goody bag or parting gift with each child who came. Consider sending a bear costume home with each child. Little Adventures has a great line of affordable washable Build a Bear costumes that also have matching girl costumes. You may be able to find discounts from online retailers for buying in bulk.

Most of all, have fun at your party and spend time with your child enjoying the simple joys in life, like becoming a year older!

Who Invented the Chocolate Chip Cookie?

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Have you ever wondered who invented the chocolate chip cookie? Because chocolate chip cookies are so common, it is easy to forget that these treats have not been around forever. In fact, did you know that chocolate chip cookies are not even one hundred years old? It's true!

The answer to "who invented the chocolate chip cookie" is: Ruth Graves Wakefield.

Ruth Graves Wakefield was born on June 17, 1903 and she is person who invented the Toll House Cookie, which was the world's first chocolate chip cookie.

Ruth Wakefield was educated at the Framingham State Normal School Development of Household Arts and she graduated in 1924. After graduating from school, she worked both as a doctor and gave lectures about food.

In 1930 Wakefield and her husband purchased a lodge for tourists in Whitman, Massachusetts (part of Plymouth County). The lodge was first built in 1709 and has a long and rich history of its own. Many weary travelers have spent the night at the lodge as it is conveniently located around halfway between New Bedford and Boston. This is usually where passers through paid a toll, changed their horses and stopped for some much appreciated home cooked food. When the Wakefields bought it, they named the lodge the Toll House Inn and made sure to keep up with the lodge's traditions. All of the home cooked meals were prepared and served by Ruth and it was not long before her desserts earned her some local fame. There were many visitors to the lodge, one of the most famous being John F. Kennedy (when he was still a Senator).

In 1940, Ruth wrote a cookbook called Toll House Tried and True Recipes. Ruth passed away in 1977 and the Toll House Inn burned down at the end of 1983. While there are plenty of companies that make and sell chocolate chips now, the recipe printed on the back of the Nestle Toll House bags is the original Ruth Graves Wakefield recipe. As of today, Nestle is the only company with the rights to print the recipe on its bags. All of the recipes that are printed on other company's' bags are different from the original recipe.

The chocolate chip cookie was invented in the late 1930s (making it almost seventy seven years old) though there are different stories about how, exactly, the original chocolate chip cookie recipe was invented. Some stories say it was an accident, others say it was an experiment and still others say that it was a purposeful recipe. The story of how the chocolate chip cookie was invented varies according to the person telling the story. One thing is for certain, though, and that is that the answer to "who invented the chocolate chip cookie" is Ruth Graves Wakefield. Who knew that what might have started out as an experiment or an accident would someday be one of the most common treats in the Western World? Who doesn't remember eating chocolate chip cookies after school?
